Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered a 36-hour ceasefire starting Friday, January 6, along the entire front line in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.
According to the note of the head of state, the decision of the head of state is a response to the call of Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church to establish a Christmas truce, which the Orthodox celebrate on January 7.
“Due to the fact that a large number of Orthodox citizens live in the area of hostilities, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire in order to allow them to visit churches on Christmas Eve and Christmas,” the official statement says. .
A few hours earlier, Cyril had declared a truce so that the faithful could celebrate Christmas.
“I, Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All RussiaI call on all parties involved in this internal conflict to ceasefire and establish a Christmas truce,” the appeal posted on the IOR website says.
“Christmas Truce”
The truce, proposed by the religious head so that believers can go to temples on Christmas Eve and Christmas, should come into force at 12:00 Moscow time (09:00 Moscow time) tomorrow, Friday, and will last until midnight (21:00 Moscow time) . ) on the 7th, for the same term of the truce by order Vladimir Putin.
This is the first time Vladimir Putin ordered a ceasefire on all fronts from the start of the military campaign on 24 February in Ukraine with the aim of “denazification and demilitarization” of a neighboring country.
Kirill’s appeal did not find a response in Kyiv: “The IOR’s statement about the “Christmas truce” is a cynical trap and an element of propaganda,” Adviser to the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podoliak wrote on Twitter.
