Japan A record 420 deaths from the coronavirus were recorded this Thursday, according to data released today by the Asian country’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
The country recorded 192,063 confirmed cases on Thursday, approaching the historic high of last August, when, according to the same source, 260,000 cases were reported in one day, although at the time the death toll did not exceed 300 in one day.
According to some experts, this increase in the number of deaths may be due to the worsening course of the disease among chronic patients, most of whom are elderly.
This makes the Asian country the first with the most confirmed cases worldwide in the past week and the second in deaths, behind only the United States, according to the World Health Organization.WHO).
strict control
The news comes after Japan announced it would step up border controls for travelers from China requiring, among other things, a PCR test upon boarding due to the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in the Asian giant and after Beijing announced the end of quarantine for travelers.
“Concern has grown in Japanas it is difficult to understand the true scale of the situation (in China),” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said last Tuesday regarding the true circulation of the virus in the neighboring country.
After strict tourism measures in previous years, this is the first Christmas holiday in Japan where there are no restrictions against the virus other than wearing a mask or getting tested if you have symptoms. (EFE)
