The reasons for this decision by the American administration are technical. The tanks are very large and require significant maintenance experience.
US President Joe Biden’s administration still prohibits the transfer of Abrams M2 tanks to Ukraine. This was reported by The Washington Post on January 4, citing an anonymous source in Washington.
According to the interlocutor of the publication, the reasons for this decision are technical.
The tanks weigh 55 tons, and their gas turbine engines use fuel “at tremendous speed.” In addition, the Abrams is easily damaged and requires significant maintenance experience.
The tanks are so heavy that 45th President Donald Trump rejected plans to include them in the 2019 Independence Day celebration, because the steel-plate treads would destroy city streets.
Instead of Abrams, the White House is considering the possibility of supplying Bradley fighting vehicles to Kyiv.
A senior US administration official said the Bradley could be included in a weapons package to be announced earlier this week.
“The Bradley could provide a significant upgrade for Ukrainian ground forces. Weighing around 28 tons, it rides on tracks like a tank and carries a crew of three, and can accommodate up to six additional soldiers in inside. The United States has thousands of vehicles, and sending them to Ukraine will not exhaust the country’s reserves,” WP wrote.
It was earlier reported that Poland signed an agreement to buy 116 Abrams M1A1 tanks from the US, which are already in service.
