In the coming weeks, a Russian breakthrough in the direction of Bakhmut is unlikely, as Ukraine has strengthened the protection of the sector.
Russia suffered heavy losses near Bakhmut in the Donetsk region and is unlikely to achieve a breakthrough in the coming weeks. This is stated in the analysis of the British Ministry of Defense, published on January 3.
It was noted that in mid-December, the Russian army and Wagner’s proxy forces mounted infantry attacks around the city, but many of these operations were poorly supported.
“In the past ten days, Ukraine has sent significant reinforcements to protect the sector, and the frequency of Russian attacks has probably decreased from the peak in mid-December,” the intelligence said.
Both sides are said to have suffered heavy losses.
“Russian offensive operations in the area are currently likely to be conducted only at the platoon or squad level. It is unlikely that Russia will achieve a significant breakthrough near Bakhmut in the coming weeks,” the British military summed up.

Recall that the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Russian army did not abandon plans to reach the administrative border of the Donetsk region and focused its efforts in the direction of Bakhmut.
