Donald Trump has floated the idea of running a third-party campaign if increasingly disgruntled Republican leaders do not back out of his bid for the presidency.
Trump signaled the possibility by publishing an article on Truth Social Wednesday promoting just such an option.
Oddly, the author of the article in the right-wing magazine American Greatness believes such a move would torpedo Trump’s chances of winning the White House. But it would also crush Republican hopes, which would be a well-deserved punishment for rejecting the popular former president, writer Dan Gelernter pointed out in his piece titled “The Coming Split.”
“Do I think Trump can win as a third-party candidate? Not. Would I vote for him as a third party candidate? Yes. Because I am not interested in supporting this corrupt [GOP] more, he wrote.
He argued that “the Republican machine has no intention of re-electing Trump: he is not a one-party team player. They’d rather lose the election to the Democrats, their criminal brothers, than win with Trump.”
He asked, “What should we do when most Republicans want Trump, but the GOP says we can’t have him? Are we voting for Ron DeSantis because he would be so much better than any Democrat? I say no, we’re not leaving.”
Trump has flirted with the idea of a third party before, and apparently mostly for revenge.
ABC White House correspondent Jonathan Karl wrote in his book “Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show” that Trump once told Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel that he was “done” with the GOP and was starting his own party .
McDaniel warned him, “You can’t do that; if you do, we will lose forever.
He replied: “Exactly – you lose forever without me. I do not care. This is what the Republicans deserve for not supporting me.”
Senate Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said last week that Trump’s political influence was “wanting.”
