The talks between Putin and Jinping have raised concerns in the US, where they say Beijing’s behavior shows it is still investing in close ties with Russia.
A US State Department spokesman expressed concern over “China’s alliance with Russia” following phone conversations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. On Friday, December 30, according to CNN.
“Beijing claims to be neutral, but its behavior clearly shows that it continues to invest in close relations with Russia,” the spokesman said in a comment on a US television channel.
He recalled that the United States and Europe have warned China about the consequences of giving Russia military aid in its war against Ukraine or systematic help in evading sanctions. The official added that Washington is closely monitoring Beijing’s actions, and “those who side with Moscow in this unjust war will surely find themselves on the wrong side of history.”
“The world is watching which countries stand up for the principles of freedom, self-determination and sovereignty, and which countries quietly support Russia in its deliberate and unprovoked war,” the spokesman said.
Recall that Putin invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to Moscow in the spring of 2023. This was discussed in the online meeting between Putin and Xi.
