The Italian Ministry of Defense believes that the possibility that Russia will use nuclear weapons, although unlikely, exists.
Russia could use a nuclear strike in the event of a threat of defeat. This is what Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto told Il Fatto Quotidiano.
“The use of tactical nuclear energy is planned by Russia. For us, it is unthinkable, but for Moscow, yes, if the point of no return is passed, if they are in danger of defeat. In other words, the risk may exist, although it is very unlikely,” said the minister.
However, he assured that Italy will continue to support Ukraine with military aid.
According to him, the assembly of the sixth package of aid to Ukraine has not yet begun, but noted that Ukraine has been asking for help in protecting against air attacks on civilian objects for a long time. The Italian official added that “if possible, we will certainly help them protect themselves.”
“You won’t find rockets in the supermarket like a jar Nutella, these are complex systems that require long production times. You cannot say: okay, tomorrow I will go and buy a hundred missiles. They are not here. Therefore, if we give Ukraine air defense systems, we must take them from our stocks, and we must do it without depriving ourselves of protection and with confidence in quality,” Crosetto summed up.
Remember, according to the Pentagon, Russia is expanding and modernizing its nuclear arsenal.
