Kim Jong-un pointed out at a conference of the Workers’ Party of Korea the principles of foreign policy and the direction of the fight against the “enemy”.
The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, on Wednesday, December 28, at a conference of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in the DPRK, set goals to strengthen the country’s military power by 2023.
The North Korean state news agency KCNA did not disclose the nature of these activities in an official statement, but noted that Kim gave an overview of the “newly complex situation” on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the broader geopolitical events.
“Kim Jong-un indicated the principles of foreign policy and the direction of fighting the enemy, which our party and government must strictly follow in order to protect sovereign rights and protect national interests,” KCNA reported.
The agency also stressed that “targets to strengthen self-defense capabilities” were presented in “a framework of preparation for various changes in the political situation.”
North Korea has launched missiles and drones
On December 26, South Korea launched fighter jets and combat helicopters, saying North Korean drones had crossed the demarcation line between the two states. It also led to the temporary suspension of civilian flights at Seoul’s airports. It has not been established whether the drones were equipped with weapons.
Before that, North Korean drones were spotted south of the South Korean border in 2014 and 2017. Their flights concerned the South Korean leadership, as UAVs can be used both for reconnaissance operations and for strikes.
On December 18, the South Korean military reported that two ballistic missiles were fired from the east coast of the Korean Peninsula into DPRK territory towards the Sea of Japan. Missiles of this type can carry nuclear warheads and hit targets in Japan.
North Korea has already launched more missiles than ever before in 2022, according to Reuters, with Pyongyang conducting more than 50 missile tests since the beginning of this year.
