This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday. USA congress that their support is “vital” not only to resist the Russian invasion, but also to achieve a “turning point” on the battlefield and hasten victory.
“Ukraine remains on its positions and will never give up,” he promised in his speech at a joint meeting of the Senate and the House of Representatives, where he was met and fired to applause and exclamations.
Zelensky He went to the Capitol after meeting at the White House with his American counterpart, Joe Bidenduring his first foreign trip since the start of the Russian invasion last February.
In his long-awaited speech, which lasted half an hour and in which he was interrupted several times by the applause of the audience, he made it clear that the aid provided should not be seen as a manifestation of charity, but rather as an “investment” in democracy.
“This is a battle not only for the life, freedom and security of Ukraine and any other people that Russia is trying to conquer. This will determine the world in which we will live, ”he said, confident that his country had already won the support of the people and now must win at the front.
His speech before the two houses of parliament comes at the height of negotiations on the US budget for fiscal year 2023, which includes about $45 billion in aid to Ukraine.
That same Wednesday, he announced a new $1.85 billion military aid package that for the first time includes the Patriot long-range air defense system that Kyiv has been pushing for to intercept Russian missiles that have destroyed key infrastructure in Ukraine.

The Republican Party, however, will take control of the lower house in January, and some of its members are questioning whether the United States should continue to provide military aid to the country, given the high cost to the federal treasury.
“Ukraine, the United States and the entire free world are united,” the Ukrainian president added, signaling that his country would “put in their place those who challenge freedom” and that foreign support would help them hasten their victory.
Zelensky himself displayed his country’s flag at the end of his speech and placed it behind him and in front of the Vice President of the United States and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, concluding by wishing him a Merry Christmas and a “happy and victorious new year.”
“I am honored to be here,” Zelenskiy said during the visit, which was rigged in a Dec. 11 phone call to Biden, in which he constantly thanked the United States both for the support already given and promised, and for they managed to unite in the world community in their favor.
Joe Biden calls for a just peace for Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden conveyed to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky his desire for the war to end with a “just peace” and the Ukrainian leader took the opportunity to thank Washington for its support and remind him that the fighting continues.
Both leaders made these announcements at the start of a highly anticipated meeting in the Oval Office of the White House.
