This is the first in France. The residence in Marseille has officially become a “temporary reception residence”. In the summer of 2021, several illegal residents managed to enter an empty building at 25 rue Saint-Basile in the 1st arrondissement using open windows on the first floor.
The building’s occupants, mostly Sierra Leoneans seeking asylum, will now be able to stay there until the end of March under the legal framework of a temporary accommodation agreement signed with the Regional Public Lands Authority, which owns the building.
Like other neighbors, Ange welcomes this. “For a long time, I saw how they climb a rope to get in and out. Now at least they come through the door. There are women and children. They are very respectful and it brings life to a small street bar.”
