In the “Extraordinary Natural Phenomenon” category, few are as captivating as volcanoes. Seething with terrifying energy from the bowels of the earth, these monstrosities of lava and smoke are as frightening as they are intriguing. This is Vulcania’s ambition to transport and educate visitors.
Surrounded by the Puy de Come, Puy de Pariou and Puy des Gouttes, the Auvergne amusement park is at the heart of its theme. The Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO heritage site since 2018, consists of ancient volcanoes that have been dormant for 5,000 years. After the idea of the famous volcanologists Katia and Maurice Kraft in 1988, the construction of the park started in 1997, with the promotion of the former president of the Republic, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. Opened in 2002, the park has since welcomed nearly seven million visitors.
In 2022, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, Vulcania was to celebrate the opening of the largest planetarium in France, with the participation of Jamie Gourmeau. guest star But due to a fire in February, it will ultimately have to wait until 2023. Visitors will find comfort in the park’s 17 other exhibits and attractions.
Vulcania is mostly built underground, with four levels you can walk around, only one of which is outside. Three topics are explored: volcanoes, other natural phenomena, and Earth in space. Each attraction aims to provide explanations on the subject it is dedicated to. Sometimes the educational aspect is put to one side, as in Le Réveil des Géants d’Auvergne.. On the contrary, it is at the center of the experience of documentaries projected on a giant 425 m² screen, such as: Through the eyes of Thomas Peske. or in the Machine Earth interactive educational trail.
An educational positioning that contrasts with behemoths like Disneyland or Asterix, which appeal to the older public with their many sensational attractions. However, Vulcania does not shy away from this type of experience, as evidenced by its first roller coasters opening in 2021.
