Ministry of Education (minedu) announced this Sunday that the daily practice of 10 minutes of physical activity will be encouraged in schools.
and possibly in work centers across the country. This happens in accordance with National Policy for Physical Activity, Recreation, Sports and Physical Education (PARDEF) approved by supreme decree.
Education Minister Rosendo Serna said PARDEF aims to have at least 50% of the Peruvian population of all ages participating in regular physical activity and sports by 2030 under a moderate post-COVID-19 scenario.
For him minedu It aims to develop an active and healthy post-quarantine life of the population through coronavirus; Likewise, it aims to popularize recreational sports among people throughout their lives and develop federated sports to improve performance in international tournaments.
Serna explained that in its development, PARDEF considers three cross-cutting approaches: the right of all to engage in physical activity and sports, equal opportunities for men and women, and the inclusion of all, taking into account their physical condition, their age group and their vocation.
Among its guidelines, the executive branch proposes to strengthen the national system of decentralized recreational sports for the population with district and regional offices throughout the country, and to develop municipal public places equipped for safe and healthy sports.
In an interview PTRminister Rosendo Serna pointed to an increase in the number of obese people due to a sedentary lifestyle, for this reason he announced a campaign marking the return of school games throughout the country.
15 million Peruvians are overweight and obese
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) warned a few months ago that about 15 million people, or 62% of Peru’s population, were overweight and obese. In addition, experts noted that this figure has increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the 2021 Demographic and Family Survey, 36.9% of people aged 15 and over are overweight and 25.8% of the same age group are obese, with women being more obese than men.
“Overweight is largely responsible for the increase in deaths from hypertensive heart disease, followed by death from diabetes and chronic kidney disease,” warned Jorge Hanko Saavedra, technical manager of the noncommunicable diseases component of MINSA.
