The news was expected from the local authorities. Reunion’s most famous volcano just woke up for the first time this year. Piton de la Furnace is currently erupting. A natural phenomenon that enthusiasts can watch on the Internet. The Reunion Tourist Office therefore offers to discover the images of the eruption live, as it invites to do on its Twitter page.
The volcanological observatory, together with the volcanological observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF), also encourages the most curious to connect to its website.
At the moment (1:00 p.m. in mainland France), bad weather conditions still prevent clear images of the volcano. No lava flow was observed this morning by various webcams around Piton de la Fournaise. The installed cameras show nothing but white smoke. But that could change in the next few hours.
Erupts on southwest flank
As the OVPF revealed this morning, in a press release and on social media, the source of the eruption is located on the southwest flank of the Rivals crater, which is approximately 2,200 meters above sea level.
The recommended alert level on the island is level 2-1, in other words, the eruption does not pose a particular threat to the safety of people, property or the environment. Of course, it is still forbidden to enter the volcano.
The seismic crisis began early in the morning
At 06:23 local time (04:23 in Paris), the OVPF recorded a seismic crisis, indicating the weakening of the environment, but primarily the imminent arrival of magma to the surface. Less than two hours later, Piton de la Furnace erupted. Let’s remind that the last awakening of the volcano dates back to December 22, 2021. The eruption then lasted for 17 days.
