Ministry of Health care (Minsa) reported this Sunday that cases of monkeypox had risen to 1,128 in the country. According to the institution, the disease is present in 16 regions of Peru.
Confirmed cases are in the capital Lima (925), the provinces of Lima (10), Callao (70), La Libertad (51), Arequipa (27), Cusco (7), Piura (6), Ica (5). , Ancash (5), Cajamarca (2), Loreto (3), Junin (3), Huanuco (2), Lambaeque (4), Ucayali (4), Tacna (2) and San Martin (2).
Minsa noted that all patients are being assisted, but, fortunately, 519 of them have already been discharged after undergoing monkeypox.
Peru is the third country with the most cases in the Americas
In the Americas, Peru is the third country with the highest number of cases of monkeypox per million inhabitants, after the United States and Canada, according to Oxford University.
Countries around the world are reporting an increase in monkeypox cases not associated with areas of West and Central Africa where the disease is endemic.
On July 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern with the highest alert level. And he said the current outbreak mostly affects men who have sex with men (MSM).
Vaccines will arrive in September
Ana Elena Chevez, senior technical adviser to the Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) revolving fund, assured that the monkeypox vaccines would arrive in Peru in early September because legal aspects are needed to get them approved.
Chevez said they had already spoken to Latin American health ministers after approving negotiations “outside the terms of the reminder fund.”
“We had a meeting with the secretariat and PAHO on August 5 to approve the negotiations that we started, but approval required the signing of a contract,” he added at Espacio Vital de RPP.
Brazil approves vaccines without registration
Brazil’s National Sanitary Inspection Agency (Anvisa) has allowed, on an “exceptional and temporary basis,” the importation of monkeypox vaccines and medicines that have not yet been registered in the country.
The collegiate leadership of the regulatory body unanimously decided to approve the rule to “accelerate public access to vaccines and medicines” against monkeypox, for which, according to the latest bulletin of the Ministry of Health, there were 3450 confirmed cases and 4491 confirmed analyzes as of August 18.
Anvisa’s solution will allow pre-registration of vaccines and medicines that have already been “approved by certain international bodies under certain conditions” without the need for bureaucratic procedures for their import and use.
