Venice, Verona, Rome… Italy can boast of being one of the most popular destinations for couples. To capitalize on this reputation as the land of love, some cities have in recent years demarcated specially designed areas for them, materialized by the sign “Zona Romance – Dual Mandatory!(‘Romance Zone: Mandatory Kiss’), reports the daily La Repubblica . The purpose: encourage lovers to discover the most beautiful scenery of the country and offer them a movie shoot on top of a cliff or a mountain. It is obvious that in case of non-fulfillment of the obligation, no penalty is provided.
It was the municipality of Sirmione (Lombardy) on the shores of Lake Garda that first came up with the idea to develop these areas in 2009. Other cities have since followed suit. A sign was also placed in the medieval town of Trentinara in Campania.kiss please(‘Kiss, please’) with portraits of Saul and Isabella, two local folklore characters nicknamed ‘Romeo and Juliet Silento’.
The latest zone was established in early August in Anacapri on the island of Capri near Naples. More precisely, at the Belvedere del Sognatore (French for The Belvedere of the Dreamer), a place reached by a staircase carved into the rock, located near the lighthouse of Punta Carena. So far, less than ten zones have been created in the entire republic, on the initiative of municipalities or their residents. No website lists them yet. But you don’t need a special space to declare your love.
