The images have been circulating since the beginning of summer. France is burning in every corner. Since June 10, more than 42,000 hectares of forest have already gone up in smoke, according to the latest data from the Civil Security Service. In total, 56,000 hectares have been affected by fires since the beginning of the year, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis). That’s more than five times the annual average from 2006 to 2021, which was set at 9,800 hectares. If the fires continue to spread, this year may reach the deadly records of 1976 (88,000 ha) and 2003 (73,000).
Between July 12 and 24, the major fires in Landiras and La Teste-de-Buch in the Gironde alone destroyed 20,000 hectares of forest. The fire started there on Tuesday, and 6,200 hectares are still burning. About 10,000 people were evacuated from the communities of Hostens, Saint-Man and Belin-Bellier.
But this year…
