The blackboard has never been removed from the old classroom at Biscarrosse plage, a room where associations are held all year round. However, in the summer, more than 700 patients are treated there each year, which becomes a reception and first aid center (Caps). To accomplish the transformation, emergency physician Bernard Fontanil attached two anatomy boards to the wall, placed an examination table on the countertops, and installed a medicine cabinet.
Established in 2001, Caps guarantees “duty, primary and secondary emergencies”, explains Fabien Farge, an emergency physician at the program’s inception. In Biskaros, a seaside resort in the north of Länder, the population multiplies by seven during the summer. However, there are only two GPs in the beach area for over 40,000 summer visitors. Hospitals are far away. An hour and a half for an emergency in Mont-de-Marsan; 45 minutes for Arcachon, already faced with an influx of patients in the summer.
