From 2,000 youth volunteers in 2019 to 40,000 in 2022, the universal national service (SNU), whose last two-week sessions were held across the country in July, is rapidly becoming more democratic. Purpose: “Bring together young people who never talk to each other and show that together they are stronger.” recalls Sarah El Hayri, the secretary of state in charge of the project. During these two weeks, 15- to 17-year-old volunteers live together and participate in all kinds of activities as part of staying together: sports, discovery of defense professions, cultural visits, debates, first aid… They then have a common mission. the interest must be fulfilled in the following year.
The budget for the UN in 2022, whose supervisors come equally from education, defense (reservists and pensioners) and associations, was 110 million euros, compared to 2 million in the first year, in 2019, around 2,700 euros…
