The war in Donbass is not lost for Kiev. But make no mistake about it. At a time when Western capitals are wrapping up their summer angst, the very outcome of the conflict and the fate of Ukraine are being played out on our doorstep. The next few weeks will be crucial. That is why Ukraine’s president is preparing his country for hardening and is urgently calling for more genuine military aid from its Western allies, mainly Washington.
Since the capture of Luhansk region a month ago, the Russians have been trampling in Donbas. The deployment of Washington-supplied Himars multiple rocket launchers disrupted the Russian logistics chain, slowing the advance of Moscow’s troops. Putin is dealing with this new operational setback by using his weapon of choice: terrorism. In recent days, the main cities of the Donetsk region, which are still under the control of Ukraine, as well as the south of the country, have been subjected to intense bombing.
