Five days and five nights of festivities kick off this Wednesday morning on the Cote des Basques in Biarritz. The thirteen-kilometer race, finishing in front of Bayonne Town Hall, is synonymous with the warm-up of many “celebrations,” as the participants, all dressed in white and red, are called, in the celebrations of King Leon. After a two-year absence due to Covid, the largest community celebration in France, listed as a UNESCO cultural heritage, celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. Around one million people are expected to attend around a hundred cultural, gastronomic, musical and sporting events in the Gascon and Basque traditions, including pelota, a giant chili omelette tasting or even a cow race. All are organized by the municipality, the Extra-Political Festival Commission and 80 festive associations called peñas.
