He Ministry of Culture announced on Tuesday that the Place of Remembrance and Reconciliation (LUM) would reopen “as soon as possible” after the municipality of Miraflores closed its headquarters on Tuesday, the same day that Amnesty International’s annual report was launched.
According to the institution, the temporary closure was due to the lack of a valid building safety certificate. Therefore, work will be carried out to correct all this.
“Remarks made by the authorities Municipality of Mirafloresin accordance with the current rules, resume the operation of the facility as soon as possible. Ministry of Culture.
Activities scheduled in LUM are suspended for the next few days until observations are taken. Among the events planned was the presentation of our Amnesty report, which consists of an exposition on the current situation of human rights in the world and will be curated by the organization’s president in Peru, Anna Maria Gonzalez.
“We will continue to work so that the LUM continues to be a space of the Ministry of Culture that offers cultural, educational, commemorative, research and memorial events to discuss issues of tolerance and social inclusion,” reads another part of the statement.
MML position
Lima Mayor Rafael López Allaga has always been critical of LUM, accusing it of “false narrative” about the country’s period of violence from 1980 to 2000. For this reason, he assured that his leadership was going to agree that it should be “managed by the armed forces and the PPP.”
In this regard, the German Embassy in Peru issued a statement inviting the mayor to visit the LUM and thereby initiate a “principled” dialogue.
“Regarding the public statements of the Mayor of Lima, which mention the German Embassy, Ambassador Sabine Bloch suggests: it is with great pleasure that I invite Mayor Rafael López Allaga to visit the exhibitions together with the responsible authorities so that a substantive dialogue can be entered into,” the statement said.
Defense needs an explanation
The Ombudsman’s Office has asked the municipality of Miraflores to elaborate on the reasons why they closed the Place of Remembrance and Reconciliation. In addition, he called on the Ministry of Culture to provide the economic and logistical resources that would allow it to reopen as soon as possible.
