Viruses can accelerate the onset of Alzheimer’s disease – scientists

A group of scientists noticed that one of the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of smell.

Viruses can cause inflammation and disrupt connections between the system that controls smell and parts of the brain associated with memory and learning, possibly speeding the onset of Alzheimer’s. It was reported by MedicalXpress.

New treatments may detect Alzheimer’s disease earlier by helping to understand the role that viruses and the olfactory system play in the disease, according to a new study from scientists at the University of Colorado.

In particular, the panel focused on the olfactory tract, the olfactory bulb and the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory and learning.

So, scientists studied six patients with familial Alzheimer’s disease. For each expert, the amount of proteins in the cell and the composition of messenger RNAs were analyzed.

It turned out that they found signs of a viral infection in the group’s olfactory bulbs and inflammation in the olfactory tract, which carries information to the hippocampus. In addition, the researchers also found altered myelination in the olfactory tract. Myelin is a protective fatty layer around nerves that allows electrical impulses to travel quickly and smoothly. If it is damaged, the alarm will be turned off.

In addition, another important factor in the association of viruses with neurodegeneration is the deposition of beta-amyloid. It is a protein fragment that plays an important role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease, especially in the beginning.

Going forward, the researchers hope to better understand the relationship between the olfactory system and the hippocampus in the context of viral susceptibility and neurodegeneration.

It was previously reported that a group of American and Indian scientists discovered that the natural compound fenhol found in basil leaves can protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease.
