We are talking about the assistant of Emperor Augustus Publius. He was known for being cruel to his slaves.
Archaeologists from the University of Naples L’Orientale discovered an ancient mosaic in the Pausilypon park. Arkeo News writes about it.
The park is located in Posillipo, which was the elite quarter of Naples in modern Italy during the Roman period.
Its main attraction is the villa of Publius Vedia Pollio, the right hand of Emperor Augustus, built in the 1st century BC.
“When the slave Publius Vedius Pollio broke a crystal bowl, he condemned him to death and insisted on being thrown into a pool of moray eels. Emperor Augustus, a close friend of Pollio’s, told the homegrown gagillionaire that save the slave’s life. Then Augustus ordered the destruction of all the precious vessels for Pollio who left his property to Augustus after his death in 15 BC, with instructions to erect a suitable monument on the spot Until during the time of Hadrian, who died in 138 AD, the villa belonged to the empire and was passed from one emperor to another,” historians said.
The mosaic floor at the beginning of the construction of the villa was discovered by archaeologists. The mosaic, composed of small white tesserae with a double black border, was discovered deliberately hidden under renovations ordered by Augustus after the death of Vedius.
The stratigraphic dating is still unknown, but judging by the style, the hall can be dated to the late Republican period or, at the latest, Augustus.
