Babies cycle through two stages of sleep. It teaches them necessary life skills.
Scientists have observed the brains of newborns while they sleep and found out why this process takes so long. The results of the study were published by the MIT Technology Review.
Consultant neurologist Topun Austin, together with colleagues from the University of Cambridge, developed a special cap with a built-in light source and sensor. So they measured blood flow in the babies’ brains on the principle of a pulse oximeter attached to a finger.
Scientists also used 12 tiles placed in a cover, connected to a computer with a cable. This made it possible to image the brain 10 times better than the fiber optic cable system.
As a result, scientists have discovered that babies cycle through two stages of sleep: active and restful.
At the same time, active sleep is important for preparing the brain of newborns for the development of conscious experience.
Recall that groups of scientists from France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States were able to contact sleeping people and get feedback from them.
The study shows how much sleep deprivation parents get after giving birth
