So, they tried to make a creature close to the gods and also make it divine.

Scientists have revealed the secrets of mummification, disproving a long-held misconception. Live Science writes about it.

It used to be believed that in ancient Egypt, the bodies of the dead were turned into mummies to preserve them. But, Campbell Price from the University of Manchester in the UK said that in this way they tried to make a dead person close to the gods and also make him holy.

“In the 19th century, archaeologists who examined Egyptian mummies mistakenly concluded that the ancient Egyptians preserved their dead in the same way they preserved fish. Their arguments were based on fact. that the same substance is used in these processes: salt. If the fish is preserved to eat it in the future, scientists suggest that they do the same to the bodies of the dead, but not to eat them, of course, but to store them for a long time,” Price said.

The scientist also considered incense, which also served as gifts for the gods.

“When incense was used in the temple, or during mummification, it sanctified the surrounding space. Likewise, when incense was applied to the body of the deceased, the same meaning was placed in this process. The body became closer to those god by its nature. And we are not talking about the preservation of the dead in its original form. I think, in fact, this process has a deeper meaning. It is about the transformation of the deceased to a holy statue,” Price added.

Recall that at the archaeological site of Saqqara, located south of Cairo in Egypt, scientists found a cache with sarcophagi and 150 bronze figurines.
