Elon Musk, the new head of Twitter, restored the account of the former US president this Saturday Donald Trumpbanned from the social network after the storming of the Washington State Capitol in January 2021.
“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” the businessman tweeted after the results of a poll conducted among his followers.
More than fifteen million responded and 51.8% voted “for” the Republican politician’s return to the platform.
A few minutes after his message, Trump’s account became visible again. The last tweet is dated January 8, 2021.
The number of subscribers, which seems to have started from scratch, was already around two million around 02:20 GMT.
Launching the poll on Friday night, Musk hinted that the result could influence the decision on whether the former US president will return to the social network, as he accompanied it with the message “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” (Latin for “the voice of the people is the voice of God” ).
The new owner of Twitter launched a request a few hours after the restoration, in the name of free speech, of other suspended user accounts.
Trump stays at Truth Social
Twitter suspended Trump indefinitely on January 8, 2021 due to the “risk of further incitement to violence” two days after his supporters invaded the US Capitol.
Musk already mentioned in May the possible return of the former Republican president, believing that this sanction represents a “morally bad and eminently unwise decision.”
Although many critics fear that the content on the social network is not moderated enough, the billionaire has been waiting for an opportunity to speak out on this topic.
Such a decision will cause a stir in much of American society and the political world, especially now that Donald Trump has re-entered the race for the White House by 2024.
Although the Republican candidate is glad that with Musk Twitter He is “in safe hands” but has said in recent days that he will remain on his social network. TruthSocialdespite that platform offering him a much smaller audience compared to Twitter, where he had over 88 million followers.
Saturday afternoon meeting Republican Jewish Coalition in Las VegasTrump said he welcomes Musk’s poll and is a fan, but appears to be rejecting any return to Twitter.
“He did a survey and it was very overwhelming… but I have something called Social Truth. On whether he would return to Twitter, he said, “I’m not considering it because I don’t see any reason for it.”
This isn’t the first time Musk has asked the opinion of his followers. For example, in late 2021 he asked them if he should sell Tesla shares, and more recently if Twitter advertisers should “support free speech” or “political correctness.”
