Automaker General Motors announced on Friday (October 27) that it has decided to temporarily stop paying for ads on Twitter, becoming the first major advertiser to question its presence on the platform since Elon Musk took over the social network.
“We’re talking to Twitter to understand where the platform is headed under its new owner.”the group said in a statement to AFP. “As is common with a significant change in media platform, we have temporarily suspended our paid advertising”, the company adds. GM, however, will continue to respond to customer inquiries on its official Twitter account.
“Infernal” platform
The group is a direct competitor to electric car maker Tesla, which is also headed by Elon Musk. But advertisers generally avoid linking to non-consensual content. Still, Twitter’s new owner presents himself as a staunch defender of free speech, leading supporters of strong content moderation to fear a resurgence of hate speech or misinformation.
Elon Musk had tried to reassure advertisers, saying Thursday that he wanted to allow all opinions to be expressed on the site without turning it into a platform. “hell” where everything would be allowed. Then he announced on Friday that he intends to arm the platform “A content moderation board with very diverse views”without further details.
