The image shows a plume of dust and debris ejected from the surface of the asteroid Dimorphos after it collided with a NASA spacecraft on September 26, 2022.
The Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope captured an image of a tail stretching thousands of miles from the DART spacecraft’s collision with asteroid Dimorph. It was reported by the Associated Press.
The image shows an expanding, comet-like tail more than 10,000 kilometers long, made up of dust and other materials.
Scientists expect the tail to grow longer and spread even further, thinning to a point where it can no longer be detected. At this point, the material will resemble any other dust in the space of the solar system.
It was previously reported that the American DART probe collided with the asteroid Dimorphos as part of an experiment to change the trajectory.
