NASA’s InSight is shrouded in dust. It can still be seen from orbit. It is assumed that it may be active until the summer of this year more.
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter sent images of the InSight lander covered in red Martian regolith. This was reported by Space.
Notice that the photos were taken using a HiRISE camera.
The InSight spacecraft itself entered safe mode in January of this year after its solar panels were covered with a large layer of Martian dust. In this regard, the module does not receive enough power. But eventually the supply of the required level of energy was restored.
“Observing changes on the surface of Mars, where InSight is only located, gives us a lot of valuable information about how dust moves on the planet’s surface and how this surface changes over time, “said NASA.
The agency also believes that due to the fact that the solar panels of the device are covered with dust, the amount of energy for the work will be enough for it until the summer or maximum until the end of 2022.
These images were shown to InSight shortly after landing and in April 2022. In particular, on the left is shown the dark zone formed as a result of the landing of the apparatus, and the parachute that helped it reach the surface. The photo on the right shows how the dust has covered the signs of spacecraft activity over the years.
Note that InSight studies the internal structure and composition of Mars, including through observations of tremors beneath the surface, called marsquakes.
Remember that the American space agency NASA wants astronauts to land on the surface of Mars by 2040.
