The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for research on human evolution

Paabo’s findings provide important information about how the world was inhabited at the time Homo sapiens moved out of Africa.

Swedish biologist Svante Paabo received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his study of human evolution. About that saying goodbye The Nobel Prize on Twitter.

It was noted that the scientist became a laureate “for discoveries in the field of the genome of extinct hominids and human evolution.”

In particular, the expert sequenced the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of modern humans. He also found that the transfer of genes from these now extinct hominins to Homo sapiens occurred after the migration from Africa to the Middle East, and from there spread around the world about 70,000 years ago.

“This ancient gene flow in modern humans has physiological implications today, such as how our immune systems respond to infections,” explained the Nobel Committee.

In addition, the committee stressed that the results of Svante Paabo’s study caused a sensation because the DNA sequence was unique compared to all known sequences from Neanderthal and modern humans.

The scientist discovered a previously unknown hominin, which was given the name Denisov. Comparing the sequences of modern humans from different parts of the world showed that gene flow also occurred between Denisova and Homo sapiens. This link was first found in populations in Melanesia and other parts of Southeast Asia, where individuals carry up to six percent of Denisov’s DNA.

It was previously reported that a student from Ukraine, who is passionate about raising awareness of the global problem of landmines and its solutions, Igor Klymenko has become the winner of the Chegg.org Global Student Award 2022.
