At the site of the ancient Greek city of Philippi in northern Greece, archaeologists have discovered a 2,000-year-old statue of the Roman god Hercules. It was reported by News Artnet.

Philippi has long been considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, as the discovery of this large Roman statue located in the town square is one of the most significant finds to date.

It was mentioned that the statue was discovered by a group of scientists from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The sculpture represents a demigod carrying a club and holding a lion skin with a crown of vine leaves.

According to mythology, Hercules killed his wife and children after his stepmother Hera drove him insane. To pay for his guilt, he performed the “12 Labors”, as a result of which he was tasked to enter Hades and capture Cerberus, the six-headed dog guarding the gates of hell, and return him to earth.
