A Chinese company wants to use its experience to clone endangered species to save nature.

A Chinese pet cloning company has announced the birth of the world’s first cloned Arctic wolf, carried by a surrogate mother, a beagle. This was reported by Science alert.

A cloned female wolf named Maya was unveiled to the world at a press conference held by the biotechnology company Sinogene Biotechnology in Beijing. Maya was born on June 10 in the laboratory, and her video was shown 100 days later.

It turns out the wolf was cloned using DNA collected from an adult Arctic wolf, named Maya, who died in captivity at a wildlife park in northeast China’s Harbin Polarland.

The original she-wolf was born in Canada and brought to China in 2006. In early 2021, she died of old age.

According to Mi Jidong, general manager of Sinogene Biotechnology, the cloning of Maya was successfully completed “after two years of painstaking work.” The researchers created 137 arctic wolf embryos by combining Maya skin cells with immature dog eggs using a process known as somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).

Of these embryos, 85 were successfully transferred to seven surrogate beagle dogs. Of these, only one is fully developed during pregnancy.

It was previously reported that a wolf and a cat with a kitten collided on the Polish-Belarusian border. As a result, the gentle mother was not defeated, and rejected the gray wolf.
