If the island were to lose all its ice, global sea levels would rise by 7.5 meters.
The American space agency NASA said that the weight of the largest island in the world – Greenland has significantly decreased due to melted ice, writes Forbes.
It has been noted that Greenland has lost five trillion tons of weight since the early 2000s. This is what climate scientist Josh Willis of the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said, whose team measured the island using two satellites, Grace and Grace FO.
“This Grace satellite and its successor Grace Follow-On have been measuring ice loss in Greenland since the early 2000s. And during that time, Greenland has lost more than five trillion tons of ice,” said climatologist.
He added that if Greenland lost all its surface ice, global sea levels would rise by 7.5 meters.
Remember, at the beginning of this year, scientists said that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet raised the level of the world’s oceans by 1.2 centimeters. The reason is climate change, from which the island has suffered more than others.
