A stunning image of the disintegration of Comet Leonard has won the 2022 Astronomical Photography Grand Prize. It caught the attention of the Royal Greenwich Observatory judges for Astronomical Photographer of the Year 2022, according to Space.com.
The picture is called Shutdown Event. Leonard’s Comet broke up earlier this year after it orbited the Sun, but not before forming a long tail that was clearly visible to newbies. This event was captured by Gerald Rehmann. His photo will be presented to participants of the highest category at the National Maritime Museum.
“The amazing Rehmann image of Comet Leonhard, a long-period comet first identified in January 2021, was taken by an Austrian photographer in Namibia on Christmas Day. This award is one of the highlights of my work at astrophotography. All the effort put into making this image successful, it’s worth it,” the observatory said.
Recall that the Hubble Space Telescope took a picture of the stars in the Terzan 4 globular cluster. Globular clusters are collections of celestial bodies held together by their mutual gravitational attraction, and may contain millions of individual stars.
