Scientists have found a new way to treat advanced lung cancer

These are implants that destroy malignant tumors in more than half of the experimental animals.

Scientists were able to prevent advanced cancer in mice with the help of implants. According to them, this is a powerful way to fight mesothelioma – an aggressive form of lung cancer, writes Science Alert.

These are alginate balls, each one and a half millimeters in diameter. They are designed to continuously produce bursts of interleukin-2 (IL-2). This natural compound activates the body’s white blood cells to fight tumors.

“Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura is a very aggressive malignancy of the lung mucosa and is very difficult to completely cure by surgical resection. In other words, there is often residual disease. The treatment of this residual disease using topical immunotherapy is the local administration of relatively high doses of immunotherapy into the pleural cavity is an attractive way to treat this disease,” the scientists said.

They combined the implants with a so-called checkpoint inhibitor, a type of drug that doesn’t directly fight cancer but trains the immune system to better recognize and destroy cancer cells. They used an inhibitor that targets the PD-1 protein.

On their own, the implants destroyed tumors in more than half of the experimental animals. When combined with a checkpoint inhibitor, the tumors were completely destroyed in seven mice.

“Our data show that the regional administration of these immunotherapy particles in mesothelioma mice produces a very provocative and very effective treatment response. In fact, I have never seen these mouse mesothelioma tumors that killed as well as this mouse model.” experts added.

Based on the results obtained by the scientists, they are confident that it is highly likely that the treatment can also effectively train the body’s memory T cells to fight mesothelioma again if it recurs.

Remember, researchers argue that drinking hot coffee can increase the risk of esophageal cancer. It is assumed that this is due to the fact that hot liquids harm the tissues of the organ.
