NASA says that on Friday, August 12, a potentially dangerous large asteroid will come close to Earth, flying at a speed that exceeds the speed of sound by 27 times. This is reported by Live Science.
The speed of sound in air on Earth is about 1200 km/h. So a potentially dangerous asteroid, according to the space agency, is flying towards our planet at a speed of about 33,000 km / h.
The diameter of an asteroid called 2015 FF is between 13 and 28 meters. It is comparable in size to an adult blue whale. Scientists believe that this space object should fly by the Earth at a distance of 4.3 million km, that is, quite close.
It was mentioned that all asteroids that are within about 200 million km from the Earth are called near-Earth, and if they approach our planet at a distance of 7.8 million km, they are assigned the status of potentially dangerous, because they can threaten Earth.
In space, any unexpected event can occur that changes the orbit of such a dangerous asteroid. Its flight trajectory can be affected by Earth’s gravity and collisions with other celestial bodies.
Recall that earlier a geomagnetic storm was recorded on Earth. It is caused by streams of charged particles that approach our planet.
