American researchers from Yale University were able to “revive” the organs of pigs an hour after their death.
The team was able to restore blood flow and cell function in the dead pigs within an hour. This was reported by France24.
It was noted that in 2019 a group of scientists from the United States managed to restore the functions of brain cells in pigs a few hours after they were decapitated. After that, the team tried to extend this technique to the whole body.
They caused heart attacks in anesthetized pigs, causing blood flow to their bodies to stop. This deprives the cells of the body of oxygen, as a result of which the pigs die.
After an hour, the scientists pumped into the bodies a liquid containing the pigs’ own blood, as well as a synthetic form of hemoglobin and drugs that protect the cells and prevent blood clots. After that, during the next six hours of the experiment, the blood began to circulate again, and many cells began to function, including those in vital organs.
“These cells work for hours after they shouldn’t, which tells us that cell death can be stopped,” said Nenad Sestan, senior author of the study and a research fellow of Yale University.
So, this discovery can save many human lives, because it will give doctors more time for organ transplants.
It was previously reported that an American organization using artificial intelligence wants to understand the language of animals and communicate with them.
