The Cartwheel changed its shape as a result of a collision with a smaller satellite galaxy, scientists have discovered.
The James Webb Space Telescope found an unusual galaxy – the ring-shaped Cartwheel, located 500 million light-years from Earth. The images were released by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
According to the agency, Cartwheel changed its shape from a normal spiral about 400 million light-years ago as a result of a collision with a smaller satellite galaxy.
Thus, two ring-shaped structures are formed, one of which surrounds the galactic center, and the other frames the entire galaxy.
It was observed that the telescope fixed the Cartwheel in an intermediate stage of formation. What will be the galaxy in the future – is unknown.

Earlier, the James Webb telescope saw its first supernova – the explosion of a dying star.
