Experts are skeptical that Starship will be ready by 2027, and even the Spacex president is concerned about possible complications.
The Consultative Council’s advice is that the Lunar Starship module from Spacex will be ready for the time for the Artemis 3 mission, which is scheduled for 2027, reports SpaceNews.
At the meeting, council members said the People’s Landing (HLS) program at Starship could be “late for years.” They came to this conclusion after visiting the Starbase base in Texas and meetings with Spacex leaders.
“The HLS schedule is seriously complicated and, in our opinion, may be behind the plan for years,” said Paul Gill, a member of Paul Gill’s council. He called the main problem of a display of cryogenic fuel transmission – a major technology for refueling starship in a near -earth orbit before flight to the moon. This stage was blocked by the delays in the creation of the third version of the Starship Missile that could perform such operations, as well as the modernization of Raptor 3 machines.
President Spacex Gwinn Schoutll has recently admitted that this is a fuel transfer that causes his greatest concern: “I hope it’s not as difficult as believing in some of our engineers.”
Despite the dangers, experts noted the Spacex achievements, especially the launch of Falcon 9. At the same time, they warned that priorities could interfere with resources from the development of HLS and influence the Artemis schedule.
Bill Bray, a member of the Council, added that preparations for Artemis 2 (the start was scheduled for the beginning of 2026) was in the plan, but the future of Artemis 3 remains “uncertain and somewhat hazy.” He pointed out the risks not only in HLS, but also in the development of new lunar spacesuits of the Axiom space, as both projects had “very aggressive” graphs.
“Any removal of these programs can be dangerous to the promptness of the lunar landing,” Bray covers.
