Scientists of Vernadsky stations have recorded a unique natural phenomenon – the icicles covered by snow crystals resembling a necklace.
In Antarctica, Ukrainian polar explorers noticed the unusual icicles, which were formed due to the inclusion of two rare natural processes. The picture was published by biologist Zoya Shvida during the release of the sea, the National Antarctic Scientific Center said.
As the head of the environment and geocosm explained, NANC Denis Pishnyak, the form of “ice necklace” appeared thanks to the melting of snowfields and a sudden snowstorm.
First, the thick layers of snow began to dissolve, and the water dissolved even after the cooling. It is at this time that a short -term snowstorm is rising, lifting a cloud of snow crystals in the air. They stick to the wet icicles, giving them a strange relief.
Most snowflakes are gathered at tips, where water drops froze, forming balls. Thanks to this, the icicles got the form of a real “ice necklace.”
Earlier it was reported that equipment in the Ukrainian Arctic Station Academician Vernadsky recorded a powerful earthquake in the Drake Strait between South America and Antarctica.
