The melting of glaciers reduces the pressure on the magma, which increases the risk of explosion – scientists who study the ancient volcano in Chile come to conclusions.
The warming of the world can provoke volcanic eruptions. The melting of glaciers reduces the pressure in the underground rooms, which can cause volcanic activity activation.
This conclusion was reached by scientists who showed their research at the Goldschmid 2025 conference in Prague. About this writes to the Guardian.
For example, they led the Mojoshuenko volcano in Chile. During the last ice season (about 26-18 thousand years ago), the 1500-meter layer of ice prevented the accumulation of magma at a depth of 10-15 km. However, about 13 thousand years ago, the glacier melted – the pressure was reduced, the gases expanded to the breed, and it caused an explosion.
Scientists have also found that after dissolving the magma ice, it becomes thicker and, accordingly, exploding.
According to researchers, Western Antarctica deserves special attention, where more than 100 potentially active volcanoes are hidden under glaciers. The risk zone is also in North America and New Zealand.
Although the explosions may temporarily cool the soil due to the release of particles blocking the sunlight, long-term explosion will only accelerate global warming-due with greenhouse gas leaks. This creates the risk of a closed circle: heat – soluble ice – explosion – even more heat.
Earlier it was reported in the province of Quebec, on the east coast of Gudzon Bay, researchers discovered excess volcanic breeds, which may be the oldest fragments of land crust
In Indonesia, Levotobi volcanic eruption continues
