The colosal sculpture in the midst of Imperial Rome describes Emperor Trajan or, perhaps, the god Dionysus.
In the middle of Rome, under the area of the Trajan forum, archaeologists discovered a large underground marble head, Roman mayor Roberto Gwalteri said. The discovery was made during the excavation on Via Aleessandrin Street, funded as part of the Italian National Restoration and Sustainability Program.
The head was found in a medieval layer consisting of a brick and lime solution – perhaps the sculpture was used as a building material after a decline in the Roman Empire.
According to preliminary estimates, the style and method of implementation indicates a picture of the imperial type, which can be given to the reign of the Emperor Trajan (about 105-115 AD). An expressive face with curly hair, tall cheeks and a concentrated look resembles Trajan’s famous images. However, some scientists suggest that it can be the image of the wine god – Dionysus, because earlier in this zone they have found a similar head with Dionysian features.
Currently, scientists are preparing to conduct a petrographic examination to determine the origin of the marble and, perhaps, accurately identify the sculpture. After the restoration, they plan to place it in the museums of imperial forums.
We remind, earlier, it was reported that in Israel a unique sarcophagus with the image of Dionysus and Hercules was found.
In the Turkish “city of gladiators” they discovered a 2000-year-old sarcophagus
