In addition to the traces of the ancient city of Metlozedum, archaeologists also discovered the trenches of World War II.
Archaeologists have discovered the significant remains of the ancient Roman city of Metlozedum, now under modern Melun in France, Armeonews reports. Excavations revealed the urban infrastructure and the strategic importance of a registration located in the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunskaya, about 40 km south -east of Paris.
Melun during the Roman era was a key point at the intersection of trade routes between the Plato Brig and Gatin. Excavations are carried out by the services of the Municipal Archeology, SDASM and the National Institute of Archaeological Research at an area of 3,500 sq.m, in which the two ancient Roman streets bent – Decumanus (Modern Belle Ombre Street) and Cardos (Dammarie Street). This makes it possible to accurately determine the ancient city network.
In the west, a large Roman house with an area of more than 700 sq.m. Despite slight antique destruction, stone foundations are preserved, indicating a multi -side structure with a patio. A well -seasoned basement 2.2 meters with lime walls, a ventilation canal, niches and a three -march staircase deserves special attention. A fragment of the Roman column was built in its design – an example of a secondary use of materials.
About 40 meters to the east, archaeologists partially open another complex buildings with an area of nearly 600 sq.m. Although its structure was damaged by modern engineering networks, a room with signs of domestic use – the remains of an oven developed by Roman tiles, and ceramic water pipes indicating the presence of a kitchen or utility room.
Between these two zones, open areas with household pits, small basements without cloak and eight wells built by almost processed lime were discovered. This indicates a combination of residential and services functioning within urban development, although there are still no signs of craft or industrial activities.
Archaeologists have yet to determine if we are talking about two separate estates or about a single large complex with an area of more than 2000 square meters. M – What would be a rare case for the architecture of the Roman era in this region.
Among the other unexpected findings were the Zigzag Trenches of World War II, which was dug into the school court to protect the population during wind invasion. They also found a French steel helmet of the 1926 model. These artifacts describe Melun’s multilayer history – from the Roman Times to the 20th century.
We will remind you, earlier reported that in France they found a removal for more than three thousand years.
