Ahead of the 2024 Olympics, Paris is hosting TwitchCon Europe 2023. Organized by Twitch, Amazon’s platform dedicated to streaming live content, the conference has been held annually in the United States since 2015. European expansion began in 2019 with a release in Berlin. But these ambitions were put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, before resuming on 15 and 16 July 2022 in Amsterdam. This edition attracted 14,500 visitors, or 65% more than in Germany.
TwitchCon is an opportunity for users of the platform to meet streamers, creators and artists. Many shows are organized on the stage, between drag queen and drag king shows, concerts, DJ sets and cosplay contests (disguising as a fictional character). Visitors wander from stand to stand to try out the latest video game releases or attend debates and meetings. And of course, video game competitions are organized between European streamers.
Stagnant audiences in France
Twitch has not specified dates for TwitchCon Paris, other than a vague “summer 2023”. It is also not known in which room the event will be held. By comparison, Paris Games Week attracts almost 300,000 visitors over five days to the Porte de Versailles in Versailles, and Japan Expo draws 250,000 visitors over four days to the Villepinte Exhibition Centre.
Twitch took advantage of the first lockdown due to the Covid 19 pandemic to double its audience in France. According to Médiamétrie, it grew from 3.4 to 6.2 million unique visitors between January and April 2020. But that figure dropped to 5.5 million visitors in January 2021, and the platform has been stagnant ever since. As of May 2022, it has registered 5.2 million unique users. TwitchCon Paris can boost those audiences.
