Archaeologists of the Israeli Antiquities Department in collaboration with the Caesarea Development Corporation have discovered a very rare Roman sarcophagus, which is decorated with sculpture depicting a mythological alcohol consumption contest between God Dionysus and Bayani Hercules, Report of ArkeOnews.
The Sarcophagus, decorated with complex carving and partially buried under the sand, was discovered by archaeologists Nochar Shahar and Shani Amit. According to them, the moment of opening resembles a scene from the film: once the sand is brush, carefully carved numbers of gods, animals, trees, as well as an entire panel that describes Hercules that depend on the lion’s skin in his hand, his eyes open.
According to experts, the sarcophaguses came from the 2 -2 -century ad brought him to antique -management workshops, where an entire image restored from fragments. It is interesting -friendly that the Hercules in this scene are depicted by the loser -in a state of intoxication, which, according to Shahara, may symbolize the Roman understanding of death not as a completion, but a transition to a new form of being.
Sarcophagus was found outside the famous city of the city of Caesarea, indicating a large size of ancient city than the previously considered. It opens new reach for further archaeological research.
