According to the new data, the number of species may be less than estimated – less than one hundred individuals.
A very rare type of UPamba lechwe antelop was first officially recorded in the picture life in a natural environment. According to The Guardian, this historic image was created during the Camalondo’s airbounding – a reduced simple place in the southern part of the Congo’s democratic republic. This is the only place on the planet where this species lives.
“It happened on the morning of the second day – a copy stopped literally for a few seconds, enough for me to hit the button – and immediately flee, as we saw,” said Manuel Weber, head of the Department of Research and Biomonitoring of Uppemba National Park.
This is the first picture of the live UPEMBA lechwe since the scientific description of the species in 2005. Although these animal examples were collected in the 1920-40s, scientists recently realized that they were talking to a separate type of antelope.
In addition to a unique picture, the weber team conducted the first survey of species of species for more than half a century. And the results became distressing: only 10 individuals were recorded throughout the registration area. Although the official analysis of the International Union of Nature Protection currently involves 600 to 1000 adults, new data suggests that in nature, maybe less than 100 individuals remain.
The main reason for extinction of species is poaching. In the 1970s, air accounts indicated the existence of 5,000 to 20,000 antelopes in Camalondo. However, in the 1980s, security measures in UPMBA’s National Park weakened, and the number of species dropped dramatically, as animals were widely destroyed for meat.
Researchers encourage to immediately restore security measures to save the view. Scientists expect the new image to attract international attention to this unique form and stimulate the rapid implementation of environmental protection measures.
The study was published in the Journal African Journal of Ecology.
