Despite the positive dynamics after surgery, doctors emphasize the need for further research. In the near future, the team plans to perform many similar operations in the framework of a clinical study.
Surgeons from the University of California in Los Angeles will hold the first successful transfer of the bladder in history, reports The Guardian.
The patient was the 41-year-old Oscar Larrainsar, the father of four children, who had previously lost both the kidneys and bladder due to cancer and in dialysis. Thanks to a unique operation, the person has been able to refuse dialysis, although the procedure still has many short and long -term risks and remains a medical freshness.
The operation was conducted by surgeons by Indderbir Gill from the University of South California and Nima Nasiri from the University of California in Los Angeles, who worked with this procedure for four years. Along with the bladder, the patient also moves a stone from the donor.
Traditionally, after removing the bladder, patients create an artificial urinary tract system using a portion of the intestines. This method often causes complications: infections, digestive problems and a general decrease in quality of life. These are the difficulties that motivate the medical community to look for successors – in particular, in developing technologies for bladder moving.
Despite the positive dynamics after surgery, doctors emphasize the need for further research. It is unclear how long the new bubble will work without complications, and how much time the patient will need immunosuppressive therapy to prevent the decline of the transplanted organ.
In the near future, the team plans to perform many similar operations in the framework of a clinical study.
