Find is one of the best sarcophage stratony in the collection due to the great state of safety and unique artistic design. Sarcophagus is planned to be placed for a show at an open archaeological museum.
Archaeologists during the excavation in the ancient city of Stratoniki in the Turkish province of Mugla have discovered a unique preserved sarcophagus with decorative garlands, almost 2000, reports Anatolian Archeology.
The city of Stratonikuya, located in the Yaganan area in southwest Turkey, is known as the “city of gladiators” thanks to the large stadium, where amazing gladiatorial battles took place. Many inscriptions and other artifacts associated with gladiatorial culture have also been found here, and the city itself is one of the largest marble cities and is included in the initial service list of the UNESCO world service.
The sarcophagus was found in the territory of Agora – the central public space of the ancient city, where political, religious and trade was held. The found, decorated with garlands from fruits, flowers and leaves, were moved from necropolis and dated a period of about the II century ad.
The sarcophagus decorates the heads of sheep in the corners, the image of the God of Eros’s love in the form of a child, as well as the heads of bulls in the middle parts. According to the leader of Bilal Sigyut excavations, the garland style and various numbers make it unique to this coffin for the ancient city. The threads of the images are noticeable in its brightness – in the sarcophagus you can see cones, grapes, olive leaves, grenades, poppy boxes that reproduce glory and prosperity of social time.
Researchers have noted that this found is one of the best sarcophage stratony in the collection, not only because of the level of safety, but also the artistic design. Perhaps, the city is a center for the manufacture of such rock coffins that exports to other regions.
Archaeologists plan to expose sarcophagus next to other finds in the open archaeological museum so visitors see this remaining memo with their own eyes.
Stratoniki excavations have continued since 1977 and covered the eras of Hellenism, the Roman Empire, Byzantium, Bealang Menteshe, the Ottoman Empire and the Republican Period.
