American geologists accidentally stabbed the remains of an ancient ocean – a giant Mozazaur, who lived more than 70 million years ago and reached 9 meters long.
In the state of Mississippi (USA), geologists found the fossil of Mozazaurus – a large predator of the Cretaceous season, which lived 70-80 million years ago.
The unexpected found was announced by scientist James Starns in a commentary for the publication of Hattiesburg American, and popular science published details.
The team from the Department of Protection of Nature conducted 3D cartography of geological layers near the University of Mississippi. During work, one of the geologists – Jonathan Lard – lost a collection of shells he collected. The search led him and James Stanks’s companion to the bone, which was slightly sinking into the mud.
“She’s so big that we didn’t even think about Mosa -zavre at first. But it was possible that this was the biggest copy found in Mississippi,” Lard shared.
According to scientists, the found copy is among the type of Mosasaurus Hoffmannii and has reached about 9 meters long. For comparison: representatives of this species can grow up to 15 meters, and weigh more than 9 tons.
The Mosavars were the dominant predators of the oceans at the end of the dinosaur period, but died about 66 million years ago – long before a person’s appearance.
