Five pictures of Ukrainian researchers from Antarctica at the same time won the prestigious competition of scientific photos for Wikipedia.
Ukrainian Polar Explorers won a record number of awards in the International Scientific Image Competition for Wikipedia 2024.
Five Antarctic photos taken by the expeditional participants at the Vernadsky academic station became the winners in various categories. It was reported to the National Antarctic Scientific Center.
In the “People in Science” nomination, the geophysicist of the 29th UAE Alexander Bogomaz first occurred at the same time. In the picture – his colleague Sergei Ermolenko is taking water samples from fresh lakes near the station.
In the “general category”, Anna Soin received a second place, which recorded a rare natural phenomenon – a rainbow in the snow. The picture is unique to that in the frame there are simultaneous drops of water and ice crystals.
In the category of “living organisms” fourth and fifth places took pictures of bogomaz and biologist Andrei Utevsky. A frame recorded the moment of defecation of the subantarctic penguin (Gentu), which, according to scientists, significantly affects the ecosystem. The second image is the Antarctic sea star of the ring labidaster, the predator of the depth.
In 2024, 72 participants joined the competition, filed 470 images. The purpose of the competition is to implass the science and describe the articles on Wikipedia. Pictures of Ukrainians are included in the best of the best of five main categories: “microscopy”, “living organisms”, “science people”, “neftographic images” and “general category”. Separately, the special nomination of the “consequences of war” acts.
Earlier it was reported that Ukrainian military photographer Konstantin Libov was recognized as a laureate of the prestigious Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award.
